The English tourist who was accused of scribbling on a wall in Coliseumin Rome, at the end of June, wrote a letter apologizing for the act.
According to the newspaper “The Guardian”, the document written by Ivan Dimitrov was addressed to the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, where the man apologizes for the act and claims that he was not aware of the “antiquity of the monument”.
“Through these lines I would like to offer my sincere apologies to Italians and the whole world for the damage caused to a good that, in fact, is the heritage of all humanity”, he said on Wednesday (5).
“It is with deep embarrassment that it was only after what unfortunately happened that I found out about the antiquity of the monument”, he added.
In a video posted on June 25, the man dressed in a blue flowered shirt appears scrawling his and his girlfriend’s names with a key on an interior wall of the ancient Roman amphitheater. He left the inscription “Ivan + Hayley 23”.[[
Shortly after the incident, Italian police identified the man, who was placed under formal investigation.
Ivan Dimitrov, who lives in Bristol, England, risks receiving a fine of at least 15,000 euros (approximately R$ 80,000) and a prison sentence of up to five years if he is convicted in Italy.
