Tourist activities grow 1.1% in January, shows IBGE

The special aggregate of Tourist activities grew 1.1% in January compared to December, according to data from the Monthly Services Survey, released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The segment still operates 9.7% below the level of February 2020, in the pre-pandemic.

From December to January, seven of the 12 areas surveyed had expansion, especially São Paulo (2.8%), Federal District (3.3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.3%). In the opposite direction, there were relevant losses in Bahia (-3.9%), Minas Gerais (-2.4%) and Paraná (-3.3%).

In comparison with January 2021, the volume index of tourist activities in Brazil increased by 29.1% in January 2022, the tenth positive rate in a row, driven by the air transport sectors; hotels; restaurants; car rental; collective passenger road; and catering services.

All 12 units of the Federation investigated showed advances, especially São Paulo (38.9%), Minas Gerais (49.0%), Rio de Janeiro (12.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (40.8% ) and Bahia (21.2%).
