A 23-year-old American tourist fell into the crater of Mount Vesuvius in Italy after trying to take a selfie to remember the moment, leaving only minor injuries.
Mount Vesuvius, which towers over the city of Naples, is a must-see on a trip to this part of the Italian coast. Last Saturday, an American family did not want to miss the opportunity to climb the more than 1200 meters and record the moment for future memory.
However, the choice of path led to an outcome that was certainly not what was expected: the young man fell and they were all indicted by the Italian police for trespassing into forbidden spaces.
The family chose not to pay the ticket that allows the excursion to the volcano – which has a minimum cost of 55 euros – and, in order to get around the entrance, chose a trail marked as prohibited because it is dangerous, as reported by The Guardian.
Upon reaching the summit of Vesuvius, the young man decided to take a selfie to remember the moment, but his cell phone slipped and fell into the mouth of the volcano. In an attempt to retrieve it, the man tried to descend through the crater, but ended up falling several meters after losing his balance, according to local media.
Volcano tour guides, police and a helicopter managed to evacuate the young man, who was treated with only a few cuts and bruises on his arms and back.
The Vesuvius volcano is the only active one in Europe, and is therefore considered one of the most dangerous in the world, especially due to its proximity to Naples and neighboring cities that are at risk of being destroyed in the event of a new eruption.
In 79 AD its volcanic activity led to the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum being completely buried, a phenomenon that gives great notoriety to the volcano and makes it so attractive to visitors. The last recorded eruption occurred in 1944.
