A tourist from Bahia, who was in Gramado (RS) for the traditional “Natal Luz” event, experienced moments of panic and revealed the fright she went through when she was woken up by the explosion of a plane that crashed in the city of Rio Grande do Sul this Sunday (22) . The accident left 10 people dead.
Emanuela Sampaio, an insurance broker from Salvador, was staying in a hotel opposite the site of the aircraft crash. In an interview with CNN, she described the moment of impact: “We were still lying down and woke up to a huge noise, a flash in the room. The windows on the floor I’m on are all facing Avenida das Hortênsias, so we took the hit, some of the hotel’s windows broke.”
Panic and confusion among guests
The accident caused panic among hotel guests. According to Emanuela, “everyone got up and went downstairs in their pajamas. The elevators filled with people, all without understanding.” Initially, it was thought that the explosion may have occurred at a nearby gas station or restaurant.
The tourist reported that the plane crashed less than 100 meters from the hotel where she was staying. “If he leaned to the left, he would hit right here on the side of the hotel. And barely, 10 meters away, he didn’t fall into the gas station here too, which would have been a much bigger tragedy”, he explained.
Mourning climate in the city
The accident drastically transformed the festive atmosphere of “Natal Luz” in Gramado. Emanuela described the atmosphere in the city after the incident: “There was a wake-up atmosphere at the hotel. A very difficult situation.” She added that there is intense movement of emergency vehicles and press at the site.
The plane crash occurred around 9:20 am, shortly after takeoff in Canela, a city neighboring Gramado. The tragedy left the community and tourists in a state of shock, contrasting sharply with the Christmas celebrations that attract visitors from all over Brazil to the mountainous region of Rio Grande do Sul.
