Tourists who were left without a return flight in Fernando de Noronha return to the continent

The vacation trip to Fernando de Noronha of the couple Fernanda and Leandro Escoralique, from Rio de Janeiro, was supposed to last six days, but they spent nine days in the archipelago.

The trip was planned in advance. They bought tickets through the GOL airline, including round-trip. But, due to the restriction of landings at the island’s airport, because of the runway conditions, the return ticket was suspended.

Therefore, the couple had to buy another ticket, from Azul, to return. They landed on the afternoon of this Wednesday (19), at Recife International Airport.

“We had to buy this other ticket so we wouldn’t miss our other vacation days, in addition to the next flight that is today. Nobody paid extra hosting for us. We pay and keep the receipts to ask for compensation or take legal action in the future, if they don’t pay”, Fernanda told our report.

Since last Wednesday (12), the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) has banned, indefinitely, landings of turbojet aircraft, because of the airport’s runway conditions, considered dangerous. The measure caused impacts on airlines and also on passengers.

In a note, GOL – which operated two daily flights between Recife and the island on jet aircraft and which are suspended – reported that it would start an extra operation with the company VOEPASS this Wednesday to serve customers affected by the restriction.

And that tickets issued to or from Noronha, since October 12, purchased directly with GOL, can be rescheduled, request credit or refund the amount.

Azul, on the other hand, reported that it had re-accommodated all impacted passengers and announced the reopening of ticket sales to or from Fernando de Noronha. This month, the company will have ten regular daily flights between Recife and the archipelago, five going and five returning. In addition to extra operations.

THE CNN contacted DIX Aeroportos, which manages the Noronha terminal.

In a note, the company clarified that airlines started to operate with propeller and turbo-prop aircraft to replace turbojet aircraft in compliance with Anac’s determinations. Smaller aircraft continue to land and take off from the island’s airport.

DIX Aeroportos also informed that the first stage of the runway works should be completed by the end of November. Then, a new assessment must be carried out so that the landing restriction is removed or not.

What does the Government of Pernambuco say?

The emergency recovery of the landing and take-off runway at Fernando de Noronha Airport – Governor Carlos Wilson, was already started on October 6, by the Secretariat of Infrastructure and Water Resources (Seinfra) and will be completed in 60 days.

The Government of Pernambuco is investing more than R$ 60 million in the complete requalification of Fernando de Noronha Airport. The interventions initiated for the execution of repairs in localized points of the landing and take-off runway (PPD) of the Airport have an investment of R$ 1.2 million.

The runway at Noronha airport is 1,845 meters long and 45 meters wide.
