Toyota recalls large quantities of Venza and Prado: problems with welding and airbags

Today, December 21, Toyota representatives officially announced the launch of two recall campaigns in Russia at once. During the first campaign, the Japanese giant will return for service almost ten thousand (9,916 copies) of Venza crossovers – all cars that were sold on the Russian market in the period from May 31, 2013 to March 3, 2016. Rosstandart reported that the reason for this recall campaign is a possible malfunction of the vehicle’s side airbags, which, of course, may well lead to undesirable consequences in a collision.

The government department said that the sensor for the Toyota Venza side airbags sold during this period are connected to the electronic control unit through wires that are routed from the door to the vehicle body through a special bushing. Accordingly, a strong bend may occur inside this sleeve, which is quite capable of leading to chafing of the sensor wires connected to the passive safety system.

“In certain types of collision, the side airbags on the driver’s side may not deploy, which increases the risk of injury,” said Rosstandart.

On all recalled vehicles, Toyota Service Centers will check this wiring harness on the driver’s side front door, and if necessary, replace it completely – all types of campaign work will be done free of charge.

The second recall campaign turned out to be less large-scale and critical – the manufacturer is returning for service only 16 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs, which were sold between May 24 and June 11, 2021. The reason for the recall is that the welded seam of the exhaust manifold of a gasoline engine is not strong enough – a defect can lead to a crack, from which exhaust gases will leak into the atmosphere during engine operation at high speeds.

“This threatens non-compliance with the standard governing emission standards for exhaust gases into the atmosphere,” added the government department.

Naturally, all SUVs under this campaign will be repaired, if necessary, completely free of charge.
