Toyota tests internal combustion engines on hydrogen: engine tests will be carried out in races in Japan


Today, April 22, Toyota representatives announced that they are actively developing an updated internal combustion engine that will run on hydrogen – thanks to this, it will be possible to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere to almost zero. And, what is most interesting, this is not a concept or plans for the distant future, but a completely working engine – its tests on a Toyota Corolla Sport are planned to be launched in May this year. Moreover, the hydrogen car is planned to be tested not on a closed track, but as part of a full-fledged race in Japan – Super Taikyu Series 2021 Powered by Hankook.

Toyota also added that under the hood of the hydrogen fuel cell car is a 1.6-liter, three-cylinder turbo engine with injection system. The only difference from a gasoline engine is that there will be compressed hydrogen in the tank of the car, while the principle of operation of the motor is absolutely the same as that of any other ICE model. But, of course, the vehicle on the updated engine does not produce harmful emissions and does not emit it into the atmosphere – due to this advantage, hydrogen cars may well displace gasoline, diesel and gas models from the market.

In addition, the use of a hydrogen engine in fast cars has its advantage – the process of igniting hydrogen is much faster than the same gasoline, so that a hydrogen engine has a higher responsiveness, and in racing this is really important. And, what is most pleasant against the background of many fast electric cars with an artificial sound of the engine roar from the speakers, the hydrogen engine sounds exactly the same as the gasoline counterparts, so sports cars, racing cars and supercars will probably be the first to receive “clean” engines. …
