Toyota to launch vehicle hardware and software update service in Japan

Toyota Motor said it will launch a service next year offering customization and upgrades for vehicles as customers cling more and more to their old vehicles.

The service, known as the Kinto Factory, will be available at the end of January. It will provide for the addition of new security functions, updating the interiors and software for the computer systems of the car.

Toyota is trying to transform itself from a car manufacturer and seller to a “mobile company” based on the provision of services. The new service is part of the Toyota Kinto brand launched in 2019 and offering car sharing services.

Kinto President Shinya Kodera said that, in the interest of sustainable development, it is best for cars to “be used for a long time in good condition and ultimately assembled and recycled.”

He added that the company will consider expanding the scope of Kinto Factory’s services to foreign countries.

The number of users of the Kinto service, which includes a flat rate car rental and insurance, increased to 28,000 by November, from 1,200 when it was launched two years ago. Kodera admitted that this result is “slightly less than expected.”
