Toyota unit suspends truck shipments after data fraud scandal

Japan’s Hino Motors said on Monday it would suspend shipments of light trucks after confirming a data falsification scandal involving these models, highlighting growing problems at Toyota’s unit.

The president of truck and bus maker Hino, Satoshi Ogiso, said the Transport Ministry had detected additional misconduct regarding emissions.

The scandal, which came to light in March, was not expected to impact smaller trucks, which have been sold since 2019.

Hino shares fell about 3.5% on Monday. Toyota shares, which has 50.1% of Hino, closed stable.

Hino said about 76,694 vehicles of its Dutro small truck model were impacted, bringing the total number of vehicles involved in the scandal to more than 640,000.

The automaker said that while the engine on the small trucks was supposed to be tested at least twice at each measurement point, it was tested only once at each location.

The shipment stoppage means Hino will stop shipping 60% of its vehicles this year, a spokesperson said.

The company will continue to ship the 1.5 T Dutro truck model since Toyota manufactures its engines.

Hino sold just 187 units of the model in fiscal 2021.

A panel commissioned by the company said this month that Hino had falsified emissions data for some engines since at least 2003, or more than a decade earlier than previously indicated.
