Toyota has announced that it will be exhibiting a hydrogen-powered Corolla at one of the world’s most important motorsport events in Japan: the 24-hour Super Taikyu.
The manufacturer will use a racing model from the Corolla family. The Super Taikyu race will take place at Fuji Circuit from May 21st to 23rd. The car will use hydrogen to power a 1.6-liter, 3-cylinder turbocharged internal combustion engine. The engine manufacturer is the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Center.
The hydrogen-powered Corolla will use a system similar to BMW’s Hydrogen 7. The BMW car uses gasoline and hydrogen. Unfortunately, the Hydrogen 7 project was abandoned due to poor autonomy. The car travels only 100 km, consuming 50 liters of fuel due to the low specific energy of hydrogen. Hopefully, the hydrogen-powered Toyota Corolla will offer better performance.
Despite its efforts to develop a viable hydrogen-powered vehicle, Toyota is also making some effort in the field of electric vehicles. By 2025, the automaker intends to make all cars of the brand electric. The announcement was made several years ago during a press conference in Tokyo.
