Trade confidence drops 1.2% in February, points out CNC

Pressured by inflation, Brazilian trade confidence fell by 1.2% in February, when compared to the previous month. The decline in optimism breaks an uptrend seen since December 2021.

The data are part of the research released this Wednesday (16) by the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC)held in all Brazilian states and the Federal District.

In February, all nine factors that regulate trade confidence fell, the survey points out.

The negative highlight was that of future investments in the sector, which fell 1.9% this month. The same scenario was only seen in April 2021, during the second wave of Covid-19 in the country, highlighted the CNC.

The survey also considers indicators such as the hiring of new employees, availability of raw materials and increase in stock.

The rise in inflation was identified as the main responsible for the reduction in optimism in February.

The survey takes into account the eighth consecutive increase in the indicator released by the IBGE, through the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA). In the last 12 months, the indicator increased by 10.38%.

The survey also shows that the pessimism in February is “inherent in the operational and conjunctural conditions that involve commercial activity, such as more expensive fuels, rent adjustments, lukewarm consumption in Brazil and rising interest rates”.

In the first two months of 2021, there was a decrease of 2.7% in the indicator, due to economic restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
