The volume of retail trade sales in the country changed 0.4% from September to October, after growing 1.2% in September, informed the IBGE this Thursday (8). This is the third growth in a row for the sector after two months of decline.
The institute revised the result for August, which previously dropped by 0.1%, to a rise of 0.2%.
Compared to October 2021, there was growth of 2.7%, the third consecutive positive result. In the year, the sector accumulated an increase of 1%, and, in the last 12 months, it varied 0.1%, the first result in the positive field in 5 months.
The market expected an increase of 0.3% in the month and 2.3% in the annual comparison.
“In the last four months, we had three results of stability – July (-0.2%), August (0.2%) and October (0.4%) – and growth of 1.2% in September. Although we are at a pace very close to stability, when we accumulate the last three months, which are in the positive field, we have a growth of 1.7%”, evaluates Cristiano Santos, research manager.
In the expanded retail trade, which includes the activities of vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction material, the volume of sales in October varied by 0.5% compared to September and 0.3% against October 2021.
Five of the eight surveyed activities recorded positive results from September to October: Furniture and household appliances (2.5%), Office, computer and communication equipment and supplies (2.0%), Other articles for personal and domestic use (2. .0%), Fuels and lubricants (0.4%) and Hiper, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.2%).
On the side of the falls, the IBGE highlights three activities: Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (-0.4%), Fabrics, clothing and footwear (-3.4%) and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (- 3.8%).
“Since 2020, Black Friday has been spraying, as companies began to anticipate promotions and discounts. We saw this now in October, especially in Furniture and Appliances and Office Equipment and Supplies. This also has to do with a certain repositioning of these activities, which grew much less after the pandemic and adopted other discount strategies”, explains Santos in a note.
In the case of office, computer and communication equipment and supplies, the specialist points out that the dollar is heavily influenced: “in October there was an appreciation of the real, which helped with the offers of these products.”
We were wrong: the previous article spoke of the sector’s second consecutive increase in October, but the IBGE revised the August data from a drop of 0.1% to a rise of 0.2%, making the month’s result the third in a row.
