Switzerland, traditionally neutral in international conflicts, has decided to adopt sanctions imposed by the 27-nation European Union on Russian officials and citizens involved in the invasion of Ukraine, condemning the Kremlin’s military offensive, a rare move for the Central European country.
Swiss President Ignacio Cassis had said on Sunday that it was “very likely” that Bern would follow the Brussels line on the Russian issue.
Following a meeting with the Swiss Federal Council, the Swiss president said that the country would immediately freeze the assets of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail Misustin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as well as the 367 last week sanctions by the European Union.
