Trafalgar Square, a sculpture with the faces of 850 transgender people

There are the faces of 850 transgender people in the work that was chosen for the fourth base of Trafalgar Square. The artist who will create it is the Mexican Teresa Margolles taking faces from London and around the world. His work will arrive in 2024, preceded by that of the sculptor from Malawi Samson Kambalu who has an anti-colonial intent.

The City Council that participated in the choice of the work said that the Mexican Margolles “works closely with the transgender community which often does not have access to social support”.

The note also explains what the monument will look like. “The”life masks“Will be arranged around the base in the shape of Tzompantli, a container for the skulls of Mesoamerican civilizations”.

Teresa Margolles is known for having often represented in her works issues and social issues and for having dealt with the consequences of death several times.

Kambalu’s work is entitled instead Antelope and it is a sculpture born from a photograph of 1914 with the Baptist pastor John Chilembwe and the European missionary John Chorley. It is an anti-colonial statue because the shepherd wears a hat which goes against the rule that Africans cannot wear one in front of white people. According to those who selected the work, which will be shown in 2022, this shows “how under-represented populations are in the history of the British Empire in Africa”.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “The international artists who participated demonstrate how this position is one of the most important in the world … The works of these two artists will shine here told some of the issues that our society faces and I know for sure that they will provoke debate within and abroad “.

Last year many of the statues in London and beyond were hit and smeared during the demonstrations of Black Lives Matter. Statues of characters linked to colonialism and also those of politicians accused of racism were attacked. Churchill’s statue in London was smeared and a monument to a slave trader was torn up in Bristol.
