Since the launch of a brief report of the Google Ai OverViews request in May 2024, the number of news search engines that do not lead to the transition to the resource has increased from 56% to 69%.
Organic traffic decreased from more than 2.3 billion visits in mid -2024 to less than 1.7 billion. The number of news queries in ChatGPT grew by 212% from January 2024 to May 2025.
News resources are faced with new realities against the backdrop of the active development of artificial intelligence, the company notes. Good SEO setting up and visibility in the search results of Google do not bring the proper effect – high traffic.
At the same time, the number of ChatGPT calls to news publishers is growing. From January to May 2024, the indicator was less than 1 million, and in 2025 it increased to 25 million.
The report also notes the effectiveness of referral traffic of different sites. The greatest increase is observed in Reuters (8.9%), Ny Post (7.1%), Business Insider (6.5%). The New York Times, which suits Openai for allegedly unauthorized copying of materials, receives less, although it is included in the top 10 with an increase of 3.1%.
The themes of stocks, finance and sports are most interested in the users of the chatbot, politics, economics, weather are gaining popularity.
News resources are faced with a crisis, since AI “kills” their traffic, and there are not so many solutions. Some practice paid subscriptions and other methods of monetization, others are forced to reduce the staff.
