A ferry with about 50 passengers collided with a cargo ship on the Sitalaksiya River, south of its capital Bangladesh Dhaka, resulting in the sinking and death of at least 26 people, while there are also missing, officials said.
Today 21 corpses were retrieved from the river, according to AMPE.
The “Sabit Al Hasan” ferry sank shortly after its departure from the Narayanganj industrial district, about 20 kilometers from Dhaka, and on its way to the neighboring district of Munshiganj, Narayanganj manager Mustafa Bila said.
“Most of the bodies were found in the sunken ferry when it was towed ashore,” he said.
Police and officials said some of the passengers managed to swim to land.
Relatives of the passengers gathered on the river bank to look for their loved ones.
Rescuers, including divers from the fire service, were looking for survivors today while search and rescue operations were hampered by last night’s storm.
The ferry was full of passengers hurried to leave the city after the government announced the imposition of a national lockdown a week, starting today, with the aim of stopping the cases coronavirus growing.
Bangladesh recorded a record daily increase in new cases yesterday – 7,087 – bringing the total number of cases to 637,364.
The death toll stands at 9,266.
