Tragedy in Bangladesh: More than 50 dead in factory fire

Tragedy struck in Bangladesh as well at least 52 people lost their lives from fire which broke out yesterday Thursday (8/7) and is still raging at a factory near Dhaka, police announced today.

Rescuers are still retrieving bodies from the building, as broadcast by APE-MPE.

According to police, at least 30 people were also injured, among which are many who jumped from high floors to escape the flames.

The number of people inside the building where the fire broke out is not yet known, and families gathered outside it are still waiting to hear news about their own people.

According to police and eyewitnesses, the fire broke out yesterday around 17:00 local time (14:00 Greek time) at the factory of Hashem Food and Beverage, which maintains this six-storey building in Roupgani, an industrial town near Dhaka.

This factory mainly produces confectionery, noodles and fruit juices.

The fire service announced that it has rescued 25 people who had taken refuge on the roof of the building, but neither was she able to clarify how many people were in it.

“Once the fire is brought under control, we will launch a search operation for survivors inside the building,” said Debasis Bardhan, a spokesman for the fire department.

Mohammad Saiful, a worker who survived the fire, said there were dozens of workers inside the factory.

“On the third floor, the access doors to the stairwell were closed. Colleagues say there were 48 people inside. “I do not know what happened to them,” he said.

Mamun, another employee, said he and 13 others ran to the roof of the building when a fire broke out on the ground floor and filled the entire building with thick black smoke.

“The firefighters lowered us with a rope,” he added.

Fires and building collapses are common in Bangladesh, a impoverished country in South Asia, mainly in its major textile industry, due to a lack of frequent compliance with safety measures and standards.
