Preliminary assessments indicate that the tragedy in Capitólio (MG), which left at least ten dead last weekend, was the result of a natural process of the type of rock formation in the region. But the collapse of the rock in Lago de Furnas also raised an alert about the importance of geological monitoring of these areas and a warning system regarding local conditions to prevent similar incidents.
The tragedy in Capitólio also coincides with a period of intense rains in the country, which had Minas Gerais among the states most affected. The risk of further flooding raises concerns about the safety of dams and people living in nearby areas.
In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira presents an assessment of the reactions to the collapse of the rock in Capitólio. To describe the measures that can be adopted to reinforce the security of tourism and the exploitation of natural resources, the researcher Luiz Fernando Barros, professor at the Department of Geology at UFMG, and the geologist Pedro Luiz Côrtes, from the Institute of Energy and USP environment.
