At least 47 people died and 43 were injured in fire which destroyed a five-storey building in central Johannesburg this morning, municipal authorities said.
“Right now we have about 47 dead and 43 injured,” said Robert Mulauji, a spokesman for the rescue service, adding that the cause of the fire is currently unknown.
According to the Associated Press, the death toll is 38.
Mulauji pointed out that the building has been evacuated and a search and rescue operation is underway, adding that the death toll may rise.
Authorities said the fire had been brought under control, but smoke was still pouring out of the building’s windows and fire engines had surrounded the building, according to images broadcast by local television networks.
