At least 17 patients were hospitalized in the state of Idalgo, in the main Mexico, died because floods caused heavy rains, the Mexican government announced on Tuesday.
“Yesterday’s rains in Hidalgo caused the Tula River to overflow, flooding the general hospital and killing 17 patients,” the government said via Twitter.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador also expressed grief via Twitter over “the death of seventeen patients in a hospital due to the overflow of the Tula River.”
“It’s a very bad day for Mexico,” he added.
Difficult days for Mexico
Two other people lost their lives due to the floods in Ecatepec, a suburb of Mexico, where many roads were flooded, Mexican media reported.
Much of the country has been hit in recent days by heavy rains, which have caused rivers to overflow.
In a video message accompanied by Soe Robledo, the director general of the Mexican Institute of Health Insurance (IMSS), which runs the flooded hospital, explained that 56 patients were being treated there and that the building flooded within minutes, causing it to shut down. electrification and cause insurmountable problems in its operation.
“When the power was cut off in the municipality (Tula), the patients were stopped receiving oxygen,” Ms. Robledo explained.
According to media reports, 15 of the 17 patients had COVID-19 and were intubated.
Images broadcast by local media show the hospital flooded and medical and nursing staff transporting stretchers with water almost to the waist.
Authorities said the surviving patients were taken to other hospitals in the state.
