Tragedy in Minas Gerais is the biggest accident in history on federal highways

The accident that occurred on BR-116, in Teófilo Otoni inside Minas Gerais is the biggest tragedy on a federal highway since 2008, according to Federal Highway Police (PRF) .

The data has been recorded since 2007 and only includes accidents in federal highways .

The tragedy in Minas Gerais resulted in 38 deaths, surpassing Bahia, with an accident that left 33 dead in 2011. The number of deaths in the biggest accidents recorded was:

  • 33 dead, Nova Itarana-BA (2011)
  • 26 dead, Descanso-SC (2011)
  • 23 dead, Gavião-BA (2024)
  • 21 dead, Guarapari-ES (2017)
  • 19 dead, Guaratuba-PR (2021)
  • 17 dead, Canindé-CE (2014)

The accident

The accident occurred on BR-116, near Teófilo Otoni, in Vale do Mucuri, in Minas Gerais, in the early hours of this Saturday (21).

The cause was a block of granite that came loose from the truck and hit a bus, which was traveling in the opposite direction. The bus, carrying 45 passengers, lost control and collided with the trailer.

A Fiat Argo that was behind the bus later collided with the truck. The passengers in the passenger vehicle were rescued alive.

According to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) of Teófilo Otoni, the total number of bodies recovered was 38, of which 25 were charred. Another 13 people were rescued alive.
