Tragedy in the Baltic: A child fell into the water from a ship, his mother dived in to save him and they drowned

A family tragedy occurred in Baltic Sea on Thursday (6/29), when a 7-year-old child fell into the water from a ship and drowned, while his mother also ended up dead, who, in her attempt to save him, also dived.

Mother and child were on the Stena Spirit ferry, traveling from Polish port of Gdynia to Swedish port of Karlskrona, with more than 300 passengers.

Once the incident was detected, the crew issued a distress signal and reportedly turned around to return to the crash site.

NATO, as well as the Swedish authorities sent ships and helicopters to rescue them and retrieved the 36-year-old woman and the child, who were airlifted to the hospital in Karlskrona, where they were pronounced dead.

The boy fell from a height of about 20 meters, from the ship, as reported. The representative of Stena Line, Anieska Zebrzyska, told TVN 24 that, “at the moment we have no information on whether this is due to a malfunction of the ship. We are working with the police and other designated authorities to explain the cause and circumstances of this incident.”.

Anders Olsson, who was in the rescue helicopter that pulled the woman from the sea, told Swedish radio on Friday (30/6) that she was “unresponsive” and first aid was administered.

The Swedish authorities are conducting an investigation to establish the circumstances under which the accident occurred.
