Tragedy in the Congo: At least 129 dead in an attempt to escape from the country’s largest prison

At least 129 people were killed, 24 of them by bullets, during an escape attempt, many details of which still remain unclear, at DR Congo’s largest prison in Kinshasa. The tragedy happened on the night of Sunday to Monday, as announced in an official report made public yesterday, Tuesday. “The provisional death toll is 129 dead, including 24 by bullets, following warnings,” Jacquemin Champany, the interior minister, told reporters. Mr. Champani also spoke of 59 injured people, who are being offered “proper” medical treatment.
