Tragedy in Tunisia: 21 migrants killed after shipwreck

Twenty-one corpses immigrants withdrew today Monday (5/7) the Tunisian port from sub-Saharan Africa and rescued 50 migrants off the Sfax, in central Tunisia, after the sinking of their boat with which they were trying to reach Europe.

“Twenty-one migrants’ bodies were retrieved after their shipwreck on July 4 and 50 migrants were rescued.” Hussem Edin Jebabli, a spokesman for the Tunisian Gendarmerie, told AFP.

The migrants, who had left the Sfax and were all from sub-Saharan Africa, were trying to reach Europe, Jebabli added.

A total of four vessels, which had sailed from Sfax, have been wrecked since June 26. Seventy-eight migrants have been rescued and 49 bodies have been recovered following the tragedies, according to the same source.

Also on July 3, a ship departing from Libya with 127 passengers sank off the coast of Zarzi in southern Tunisia. Eighty-four migrants were rescued and 43 were missing, the Tunisian Red Crescent announced on Saturday.
