Tragedy in Virgin Radio, the director Alex Benedetti takes his life

Alex Benedetti deeply loved music and radio, passions that have marked every moment of his life. It is precisely in the headquarters of “his” broadcaster that the tragedy was consumed: The director of Virgin Radio took his own life by throwing himself from his office on the sixth floor of the building in via Turati, in Milan, which houses Mediaset radio broadcasters.

It happened around 1pm, on a lunch break, while many colleagues were in Sanremo for the Festival. The images of the surveillance cameras have clarified the dynamics of the gesture. The Milan prosecutor’s office, with the prosecutor Francesca Crupi, opened a file for instigation to suicide, an act necessary to allow the State Police to carry out all the investigations of the case. The autopsy has been arranged, while investigators will listen to friends and acquaintances to better understand the context of the tragedy. The presence of a farewell ticket has not been confirmed, but in recent times Benedicts would have confided to some friends to find himself in economic difficulties and to have remained victim of a “scam” linked to the renovation of an apartment.

Originally from Udine, Alex Benedetti had discovered the passion for the world of entertainment from a very young age: At just 13 he had started working in the Mr Charlie disco in Lignano Sabbiadoroalthough initially his task was to deal with the lights rather than music. After graduating from Portogruaro, his career took shape with An intense apprenticeship between radio and discos. In 1994 he joined the Radio Italia network, taking care of the house ranking in the night program Suburbia conducted by Marco Biondi. The big jump took place in 2007 with his entrance to Virgin Radiofirst as a musical programmer, then as a programming manager, to become director in April 2019.

In Sanremo, as a sign of mourning, Radio Mediaset decided to cancel the gala evening scheduled at Villa Nobel, an exclusive event that would have started the radio activities of the Festival, with the presence of artists in the race and representatives of the record companies.
