Train collision in Chile leaves two dead and nine seriously injured

Two people died and nine were injured this Thursday (20) after a train being tested by Chile’s state railway company (EFE) collided with a freight train operated by the private company Fepasa, EFE said in a statement.

The accident happened in the San Bernardo area, just after midnight local time, when the EFE train collided with the other Fepasa vehicle, which was stopped. The freight train carried approximately 1,346 metric tons of copper.

The injured, who include four Chinese nationals, were part of the test train crew and are receiving medical treatment.

Local police opened an investigation into the case.

“The nine people are, at this moment, in serious condition, but they were all removed from the scene and their lives are not at risk,” said prosecutor Aravena during a press conference with local media.

EFE confirmed that the two people who died were Fepasa freight train operators.

The rescue operation involved firefighters from San Bernardo and Buin. Early reports indicated that the test train was performing high-speed maneuvers when it collided with the stopped freight train, according to Aravena.
