Training Station Station Leaves at least 18 dead in India

At least 18 people, including 10 women and three children, died in a trampling involving a crowd at a New Delhi railway station on Saturday (15).

The turmoil happened when passengers were trying to board trains to the world’s largest religious meeting, according to Indian media.

Indian Capital Police Deputy Commissioner KPS Malhotra told Ani News of India that the confusion began because of the delays of two trains. With this, the platform was overcrowded and the situation went out of control for about 15 minutes.

Many of the passengers were going to Maha Kumbh Mela in the Indian city of Prayagraj.

Over the course of six weeks, it is expected that impressive 400 million people will attend the event, which is also known as the Sacred Jar Festival.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “distressed” with the deaths.

“My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a rapid recovery. Authorities are assisting all those who have been affected, ”Modi wrote on social network X.

The Minister of the Union of India, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said in X that he was “deeply sad with the unfortunate” with the situation.

“My prayers are with all those who have lost their loved ones. The whole team is working to help all those who have been affected by this tragic case, ”he wrote.

Vaishnaw said four trains were used to remove people from the station.
