Actress and model Carol Marra believes that TV has a “great debt” to the transgender population in terms of representation.
In an interview with CNN Radio on CNN No Plural+, she, who is a trans woman, stated that “prejudice comes from lack of information” and recalled that the roles of transsexuals and transvestites generally have a history of following stereotypes.
“I was never a ‘normal person’, I know doctors, teachers, several professions with trans people, but they never had this real representation, everyone thinks that being trans is clowning.”
According to her, “they are normal people, with dilemmas, joys, who pay taxes, but who have never been represented in this way.”
While Carol believes it is “a lot of responsibility to be an example to other people”, she said she understands the importance of inspiring others.
“I have followers, trans girls, who live in the interior and have dreams of having another life and don’t have the opportunity.”
For her, the fact that she made soap operas, graced magazine covers, and had “a normal life”, ends up being inspiring.
She lamented that Brazil “is still the country that kills the most trans people in the world, which is very tragic, being killed for wanting to be who she is.”
The actress believes that “it remains to show that we are normal people, human beings like any other and respect that is what summarizes everything”.
