A whole renewal has emerged in beauty pageants, not only in the Miss Universe franchise with its new owner or the changes in requirements that have been made for the applicants, but there are also other contests that have understood the importance of removing stereotypes and renew some systemic ideas of the standards.
Such is the case of the Miss Greater Derry 2023 contest, organized by Miss America, which recently had 19-year-old Brian Nguyen as the winner, a girl who has managed to be crowned trans queen in the first 100 years of the organization’s life.
Brian is a girl who has not only defended the rights of trans women, she is also an activist in favor of non-discrimination against women curvy either plus size. Precisely with this triumph, she shows that talking about inclusion is overthrowing the thought that women with those sizes cannot participate in beauty pageants.
Said pageant was held on November 8 in New Hampshire and through the Miss America portal, the news was released that today has gone around the world. In addition, on the portal, the organization assured that this decision demonstrates that there can be a world “without discrimination, defamation, violence incited by hate, bullying and abuse of the Internet.”
It is worth mentioning that this girl’s triumph came shortly after the United States Court of Appeals ruled that transgender contestants could be excluded from the organization’s events because they are for biological women, for the purpose of “expressing the ideal vision of the American woman. However, this court also ruled that Miss United States of America has First Amendment rights to determine who competes in her pageants.
The Miss Greater Derry Scholarship Program offers scholarships to young women ages 17-24 living in the Greater Derry area, recognizing outstanding achievement in scholastic aptitude, talent, character, community service, and poise.

For her part, the winner of the contest expressed her feelings regarding her success and through her social networks gave a speech in which she is visibly proud of her own triumph.
In the 100-year history of Miss America, I have officially become the first transgender woman within the Miss America Organization. There are no words that can describe the feeling of having the opportunity to serve my community and represent it for the first time at Miss New Hampshire. I am very honored to be crowned your new Miss Greater Derry 2023 and I am excited to show you everything I have up my sleeve. This is going to be an amazing year.
