Transgender students and female students can choose their own names to enroll in school

Transgender students and female students can choose a name other than the personal name. It happens in a Roman high school, the artistic Ripetta, in the center of Rome. It is the fourth institute in Italy to allow it, while many universities have already approved such regulations.

Is called Career Alias and this is how the school regulations explain it: “Activation of the alias career can be requested by the family of a minor pupil or by an adult pupil who can demonstrate that he has undertaken a psychological and / or medical path aimed at allowing any rectification of attribution of gender and wish to use a name other than the personal one “.

Children can therefore decide to be called with the chosen name and not with the one deposited in the registry office and given at the time of registration.

The principal of the high school, Anna De Santis, explained that she had signed the regulation after a confrontation with the ASL and in the face of data that I say that among transgender children the drop out of school is three times higher than in others. “What is diversity elsewhere is the norm with us. Consequently, it is right to accompany and help these boys and girls who are starting a very complex path, ”the manager told the Messenger.

The Lazio Middle Students Network has invited other schools to do the same. «We see the school as the fundamental social infrastructure to undermine systemic injustices and to rethink our society in a freer and more egalitarian sense. Our proposal to approve the “Career Alias” in every school in our Region is right in the wake of all our battles ». He also created a document for the request.

For those who start the transition the old name is dead, dead name, in English, but it is also one of the strongest legacies to disappear, the greatest link with an identity that you no longer want to recognize.
