Transition from 30 days to end of emergency is short, says infectious disease specialist

In an interview with CNN This Sunday (24), Unicamp infectologist Raquel Stucchi said that the 30-day transition period for the end of the Covid-19 emergency in Brazil is short. The ordinance signed by the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, determines that the period would begin with the publication of the measure in the Official Gazette of the Union.

“With the complexity that we have, with the complexity that Covid has required – we have more than 170 decrees that were released, incorporated, because we were in a health emergency situation and would need to be reviewed. 30 days is a very short period of time for this adaptation”, said the specialist.

Other entities also criticized the determined period. In an official letter, the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass) and the National Council of Municipal Health Secretaries (Conasems) asked for a period of 90 days for the ordinance to take effect.

According to Stucchi, the “significant reduction in all our rates, especially hospitalization and death”, is a factor that favors the end of the emergency. On the other hand, the infectologist criticizes the way in which the Health Department proceeded.

“It was not agreed, agreed and planned properly with the states and municipalities,” he said.

Faced with the improvement in rates, other countries also began to relax measures. However, the specialist emphasizes that the end of the emergency cannot be associated with the end of care.

“Covid will continue among us, we all already know that, what we cannot let go of is that Covid is one of the neglected and neglected diseases, because it could have an impact.”
