Transition group tries to prevent sale of Candiota thermoelectric plant

The Mines and Energy working group of the government transition team should intervene in a possible sale of the Candiota plant. This information was supplied by the president of the PT in Bagé (RS), Paulo Parera, after a meeting with the WG on Wednesday (7).

The Candiota III Thermoelectric is a coal-fired power plant located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Currently, the plant belongs to Eletrobras.

At the meeting, a group made up of mayors and councilors from the region of Campanha Gaúcha delivered a document to the Minas and Energy WG in which it requested measures to prevent the plant from being sold.

Giles de Azevedo, a member of the Mines and Energy WG, stated that he will intervene in this possible purchase and that he will forward a letter to the civil office and to the BNDES (National Bank for Social Development) requesting information about this possible sale.

Parera said to CNN that the group’s position is to intervene in order to have a deeper debate on the subject. He believes that the sale of the plant would bring negative economic consequences for the region. “We know that the federal government only owns 40% of the company’s shares, but the government, having 40%, has the power to try to intervene in the process,” he said.
