Transnistria: Explosions at the Ministry of State Security

LAST UPDATE 20:15

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a State Security building in Tiraspol, the capital of Moldova’s breakaway region of Transnistria, Russia’s state-run TASS news agency reported, citing a local television station.

According to Reuters, there are no reports of casualties.

Shots transmitted by local media, which could not be verified, show that the windows and doors of the building are broken.

According to police, the successive explosions today at the headquarters of the Ministry of State Security in Tirassol, the capital of Transnista, are due to attack with rocket launchers.

“The windows on the upper floors were broken. Smoke is rising from the building. The area has been cordoned off by police,” the statement said.

The blasts occurred around 3 p.m. There are no injuries.

Photographs posted by eyewitnesses on social networking sites show the damaged front door and broken windows of a neighboring building.

Firefighters and police rushed to the scene and traffic in the city center was stopped.

Today is a holiday in Transnistria, due to the celebrations for the Easter of the Orthodox.

Transnistria, a region of 500,000 people, seceded from Moldova after a brief civil war shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union. It has not been recognized as an independent state by the international community, nor by Russia. But it has its own currency and its own security forces. It is heavily dependent on Russia, which supplies it with free gas and has deployed 1,500 troops there.
