The government of pro-Russian separatists in Transnistria, a de facto breakaway province of Moldova since 1992, has accused Ukraine of attacking a drone loaded with explosive-laden unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on Tuesday, destroying facilities.
“According to experts, the UAV” with the dangerous cargo was sent from the Ukrainian side, “said a statement from the Transnistrian Interior Ministry. According to the same source, the UAV was destroyed.
It is impossible for this information to be verified independently.
In the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has entered its third month, concerns are being expressed that the conflict is spreading to Transnistria, its southwestern neighbor.
Two towers with broadcast antennas have been destroyed in the area in recent weeks. They also reported an attack on the Transnistrian intelligence service and fire on Russian military positions.
The separatists and Moscow have blamed Kiev for the incidents, which it categorically denies.
Transnistria, with a mixed population of mostly Russians and Ukrainians, tried to secede from Moldova in 1990, when the then Moldovan government was considering joining Romania.
About 1,500 Russian troops are stationed in the area, partly to guard old weapons and ammunition depots, partly to support the separatist government in the region, which Moldova still considers part of its own national territory.
