The Minister of Health Speranza is not there to see people leave for trips at Easter because you can go abroad. And therefore with a new ordinance he has a hard line: for arrivals and returns from European Union countries, buffer at the start, 5-day quarantine and further buffer at the end of the 5 days. The rule will be in effect from today until April 6. IS it also applies to foreigners wishing to come to our country to spend the Easter holidays.
After protests from tour operators and hoteliers for the rules that allow you to fly across the border but prevent travel at home, the government intervenes. And it does so with a rule that limits admissions and inevitably discourages those who had chosen to take a few days off. It does so to prevent what happened last summer with the freedom of travel in Italy and abroad which has contributed to increasing infections. But it unleashes an even more ferocious controversy
For the President Astoi Confindustria the quarantine on return from the EU causes everyone to lose: “Frankly, we cannot disconnect this last-minute health measure from the controversy of recent days about the fact that we can travel to some foreign countries for Easter. Why hasn’t this ordinance been done before? It seems to mean: let’s make it more difficult to go abroad. We tour operators are also Italian companies. And we are talking about just two charters (180 passengers), a tiny number compared to the very serious losses of the last year ».
“The patch is worse than the hole”, says the president of Federalberghi Bernabò Bocca, commenting on the ordinance. “We absolutely did not want to make war on the Italians who went abroad – he says – nor to Italian tour operators and travel agencies of which we have the utmost consideration. Our speech is only this: if the buffer is valid for going abroad it must also apply in Italy. Federalberghi has an agreement with more than two thousand diagnostic centers for swabs in hotels. If it is allowed to board a plane with a tampon, it is also allowed in the hotel ».
The countries on the list for which a five-day quarantine is required are: Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark (including the Faroe Islands and Greenland). Then Estonia, Finland, France (including Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyana, Réunion, Mayotte and excluding other territories located outside the European continent). Also Germany, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands (excluding territories located outside the European continent). And again Poland, Portugal (including the Azores and Madeira), the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (including territories on the African continent). Finally, Sweden, Hungary, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Andorra, Principality of Monaco.
Meanwhile, Germany announces a tightening of land border controls in the midst of the third wave of the pandemic. Germany will strengthen for the next “8-14 days”, therefore throughout the Easter period and beyond, controls at land borders, in particular with France, Denmark and Poland, the German Interior Minister announced.
