Travel receipts in June surpassed 2019

Slightly up on 2019, the last year before the pandemic, were June travel receipts with average spend per trip at +15.9% offsetting an 11.% decline in travel traffic.

In particular, as announced by the Bank of Greece, the travel balance showed a surplus of 2,416.1 million euros in June 2022 and 4,191.9 million euros in the period January-June 2022.

In the last pre-pandemic year 2019, the travel balance showed a surplus of €2,362.9 million in June and €4,077.1 million in the January-June 2019 period.

Travel receipts increased by 224.5% in June 2022 and by 329.3% in the period January-June 2022 compared to the corresponding periods of 2021.

Compared to the corresponding periods of 2019, travel receipts increased by 2.3% in June 2022, while they decreased by 5.3% in the period January-June 2022.

Inbound travel traffic increased by 241.5% in June 2022 and by 360.8% in January-June 2022 compared to the corresponding periods in 2021.

Compared to the corresponding periods of 2019, inbound travel decreased by 11.0% in June 2022 and by 15.1% in the period January-June 2022.

Travel balance

According to the provisional data, the travel balance in June 2022 showed a surplus of 2,416.1 million euros, compared to a surplus of 705.5 million euros in the corresponding month of 2021.

In particular, an increase of 224.5% was recorded in June 2022 by travel receipts, which amounted to 2,617.6 million euros, compared to 806.7 million euros in the corresponding month of 2021, while an increase of 99.1% was also observed in travel payments (June 2022: €201.5 million, June 2021: €101.2 million).

The increase in travel receipts was driven by a 241.5% increase in inbound travel traffic as average spend per trip fell by 5.7%. Net receipts from the provision of travel services offset 81.9% of the deficit in the goods balance and contributed 88.0% to total net receipts from services.

In the period January-June 2022, the travel balance showed a surplus of 4,191.9 million euros, compared to a surplus of 868.6 million euros in the corresponding period of 2021.

An increase of 3,932.3 million euros or 329.3% was shown by travel receipts, which amounted to 5,126.3 million euros, while an increase of 609.0 million euros or 187.2% was also observed in travel payments, the which amounted to 934.4 million euros.

The increase in travel receipts was driven by a 360.8% increase in inbound travel traffic as average spend per trip fell by 7.9%. Net receipts from the provision of travel services offset by 23.4% the deficit in the goods balance and contributed 67.6% to the total net receipts from services.

Travel receipts

In June 2022, as mentioned above, travel receipts increased by 224.5% compared to the corresponding month of 2021. More specifically, receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries showed an increase of 179.5%, which were formed in €1,566.4 million, while receipts from non-EU-27 residents increased by 321.8% (June 2022: €1,001.7 million, June 2021: €237.5 million).

The rise in receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries was the result of an increase in receipts from residents of the euro area countries by 184.9% (June 2022: €1,239.7 million, June 2021: €435.2 million). euros), as well as receipts from residents of EU-27 countries outside the euro zone by 160.8%, which amounted to 326.7 million euros.

In particular, with regard to the most important countries of origin of travelers from the euro zone, receipts from Germany increased by 169.0% and amounted to 577.8 million euros and those from France by 116.2% to 157.4 million . euro. From countries outside the EU-27, receipts from the United Kingdom rose by 633.2% to €427.4 million, while receipts from the USA increased by 219.3% to €157. ,1 million euros. Collections from Russia also rose by 38.1% to €6.0 million.

In the January-June 2022 period, travel receipts showed an increase of 329.3% compared to the corresponding period of 2021 and amounted to 5,126.3 million euros. This development is due to the increase in receipts from residents of EU-27 countries by 263.7%, which amounted to 2,980.9 million euros, as well as receipts from residents of non-EU-27 countries by 462.4 %, which amounted to 2,029.0 million euros.

In more detail, receipts from residents of the euro zone countries amounted to 2,476.7 million euros, increased by 281.3%, while receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries outside the euro zone showed an increase of 196.3 % and amounted to 504.2 million euros.

In particular, receipts from Germany increased by 264.6% and amounted to 1,086.1 million euros, while receipts from France increased by 247.9% and amounted to 378.8 million euros. From the countries outside the EU-27, receipts from the United Kingdom showed an increase of 873.6%, which amounted to 792.7 million euros. Receipts from the US increased by 450.1% to €336.7 million, while those from Russia increased by 115.7% to €13.9 million.

Inbound travel traffic

Inbound travel traffic in June 2022 amounted to 3,649.4 thousand travelers, increased by 241.5% compared to the corresponding month of 2021. In particular, travel traffic through airports increased by 262.1% compared to June of 2021 and this through road border stations by 187.0%. The increase in inbound travel came from a rise in travel from both EU-27 countries (by 199.7%) and non-EU-27 countries (by 342.4%). In more detail, the travel traffic from the countries of the euro zone was formed at 1,596.0 thousand travelers, increased by 211.2%. Travel traffic from the EU-27 countries outside the euro area also showed an increase of 175.3%, which amounted to 668.9 thousand travelers.

In particular, travel traffic from Germany showed an increase of 188.7% to 684.1 thousand travelers, while that from France increased by 166.7% to 225.4 thousand travelers. In relation to countries outside the EU-27, travel traffic from the United Kingdom increased by 891.7% to 592.4 thousand travelers and that from the USA by 391.8% to 150.7 thousand travelers . Finally, travel traffic from Russia also increased by 58.9% and amounted to 4.4 thousand travelers.

In the January-June 2022 period, inbound travel traffic increased by 360.8% and amounted to 7,983.3 thousand travelers, compared to 1,732.5 thousand travelers in the corresponding period of 2021.

In particular, travel traffic through airports increased by 428.9%, while that through road stations by 247.9%. During the reviewed period, travel traffic from EU-27 countries amounted to 4,792.6 thousand travelers, showing an increase of 305.2% compared to the corresponding period of 2021, while travel traffic from non-EU countries -27 increased by 480.3% and amounted to 3,190.8 thousand travelers. Travel traffic from euro area countries increased by 345.3%, while travel traffic from EU-27 countries outside the euro area increased by 221.6%.

In particular, travel traffic from Germany increased by 316.4% and reached 1,422.5 thousand travelers, while that from France increased by 315.4% and reached 530.4 thousand travelers. In relation to countries outside the EU-27, travel traffic from the United Kingdom increased by 1,251.9% to 1,218.1 thousand travelers, while that from the USA increased by 745.9% to 324.8 thousand travelers. Finally, travel traffic from Russia increased by 318.4% and amounted to 16.0 thousand travelers.

Comparison with 2019, the last year before the pandemic

Compared to June 2019, June 2022 saw travel receipts increase by 2.3%, average spend per trip increased by 15.9%, while inbound travel traffic decreased by 11.0%.

Compared to the period January-June 2019, in the period January-June 2022 travel receipts showed a decrease of 5.3% and inbound travel traffic by 15.1%, while the average expenditure per trip increased by 12.6%.
