Procida, in addition to being the Capital of Culture 2022, has become the first covid free island in Italy. In fact, the mass vaccination campaign on the island which lasted 4 days, from Wednesday 28 April to Saturday 1 May, ended with the administration of 6,115 anti Covid vaccines on a vaccinable population of 7,500 people. Then it will be the turn of Ischia, to have the Campania islands all covid free by the end of May.
Where is it
Procida is located in the Gulf of Naples and, together with Ischia, Vivara and Nisida, is part of the Flegrean Islands.
These splendid islands, together with Capri, which is about 30 kilometers away, make up the Campania Archipelago. The island, which extends for only 4 kilometers, is a color palette in the middle of the sea and is the smallest and least known island in the Gulf of Naples. Here scenes of de The postman e Mr Ripley’s talent.
The island can be divided into five areas:
- Porto
- Corricella
- Terra Murtata
- Ciraccio
- Chiaiolella
Upon arrival, along the coast, you will be amazed by the many colorful houses overlooking the Chiaia bay.
The main point of Procida is Marina Corricella, the picturesque fishing village built into the rock that leads to the sea. The 17th century settlement is pedestrianized and can only be reached by stairs in the passages through the houses. Along the waterfront there are piles of fishing nets and patio restaurants where you can enjoy a meal overlooking the Terra Murata and the fishing boats. One of the most instagrammable places on the island is undoubtedly Corricella seen from the Belvedere dei cannoni. This fishing village was the set of some scenes of the film “Il Postino” with Massimo Troisi.
Another place not to be missed is Terra Murata, the fortified citadel located at the highest point of the island. Right on the top it is located Palazzo d’Avalos, which can be reached along narrow and steep streets. The palace, built in the 16th century, was transformed into a prison in 1830 and was only closed definitively in 1988.
Marina Chiaiolella is the tourist port of the island characterized by the promenade with bars, restaurants and shops. More or less in the middle of what is the longest beach of Procida, enclosed on the right by the islet of Vivara, are the stacks.
Pozzo Vecchio beach it is among the most beautiful on the island and was chosen by Massimo Troisi to shoot some scenes of his film (for this reason it is also called Spiaggia del Postino).
Where to eat
Unsurprisingly, fish dominates the island’s menus. Here’s where to eat:
The Pergola: this delightful restaurant is located in a lemon grove in the center of the island: you eat under a pergola with lemons hanging over you. Among the dishes to try the vegetable appetizers, pancakes and bruschetta and ravioli with artichokes and ricotta in fresh tomato sauce.
The Piazzetta: the pizzas and the lemon caprese cake are delicious and inexpensive and the location in a square above Marina Corricella is wonderful. You have a view of the church and the sea
Graziella Bar: Marina Corricella is a very picturesque place for a meal but the restaurants are the most touristic on the island. Here the pasta with pesto is delicious, large portions and reasonable prices.
Bar Dal Cavaliere: a good place in Marina Grande to try local sweets such as lemon-filled puff pastry. It is close to the ferry, so convenient for one last breakfast before setting off.
Where to sleep
The island is small and the accommodations are few, but the most characteristic is the house of the writer Elsa Morante. Here it is possible to sleep in the apartments where the winner of the Strega Prize, who discovered Procida in the early 1940s, took refuge with her husband Alberto Moravia to escape the horrors of war. Here he wrote theArthur’s Island, which tells the story of Arturo Gerace, a little urchin in love with adventure. The recently restored house consists of two bedrooms, a living room with sofa bed and kitchenette and a large bathroom.
How to get
Procida can be reached by sea both from Naples, from the ports of Calata di Massa and Molo Beverello, and from Pozzuoli. From the first there are only ferries (Caremar, Medmar) which take about 1 hour. From the second only hydrofoils (Caremar, Snav) depart and the duration of the crossing is about 45m. Finally, from Pozzuoli ferries leave (Medmar, Caremar, Gestur) and the duration of the average crossing is 40 min. Procida can also be reached from Ischia
