TRE-DF deputy announces retirement as a protest for Moraes’ speech

The vice president of the Regional Electoral Court of the Federal District (TRE-DF), Sebastião Coelho da Silva, announced his retirement at the trial session last Friday (19) and attributed his departure from office to a reaction to the Federal Supreme Court. (STF) and the speech of Minister Alexandre de Moraes in his inauguration as president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

“I am announcing my retirement. They will ask me: ‘Why are you going to retire, Sebastião Coelho da Silva’? And I answer: Mr President, colleagues, I have been for a long time, and I cannot say another word, I need to be careful with them, I have not been happy with the Federal Supreme Court for a long time. So, those who are not happy in the organ cannot continue”, he said.

The judge said that he was at the inauguration ceremony of Alexandre de Moraes and hoped that the minister would “take advantage of the presence” of the former presidents of the Republic, the main candidates and President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) “to make a peace call for the nation” and not a “declaration of war on the country”.

“What I saw, in my opinion, the eminent minister Alexandre de Moraes made a declaration of war on the country. His speech is a speech that ignites, it’s a speech that doesn’t add, and I don’t want to participate in it ”, he criticized.

The judge stated that, while awaiting retirement, he will comply with the laws, but not “a minister’s speech, whether he is in office, on Twitter, or on social networks”. “The magistrate has to be sober. When the magistrate speaks outside the process, he causes disaggregation”, he criticized.

Applauded several times by the authorities present at his inauguration ceremony, last Tuesday (16), Minister Alexandre de Moraes made a forceful speech in defense of the electoral system and democracy.

CNN has contacted Moraes, but has not yet received a response.
