Treasury Secretary predicts Aid Brazil of R$ 400 for 2023

The Special Secretary of the Treasury and Budget of the Ministry of Economy, Esteves Colnago, said this Monday (25) that the Annual Budget Law Project (PLOA) for 2023, which defines the federal government’s spending for the next year, should foresee the Aid Brazil in R$ 400.

Colnago said that keeping Auxilio Brasil at R$600 for next year would cost the public coffers up to R$60 billion, and it would be a “great challenge” to maintain that amount.

“The PLOA should go with the R$ 400, but I think it is important to bring you, in the PLOA presentation, what would be the impacts of a possible change in the legal framework and the maintenance of this R$ 600 in a next year. Roughly speaking, we are talking about an impact of between R$50 and R$60 billion more in obligations”, said the secretary.

The statement comes a day after President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) himself stated that he will keep the benefit at around R$600 in a possible next government. The information was confirmed by the president himself to CNN last week, and reaffirmed at the launch of the president’s candidacy for reelection, this Sunday (24).

A week ago, PT presidential candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said in an interview with Correio Braziliense that he also intends to keep the new Auxílio Brasil value at R$600, if elected in October.

The Auxílio Brasil will be worth R$ 600 but only until December of this year and should start being paid to poorer families in August. From 2023, the forecast is that the benefit will return to the amount of R$ 400.
