“Tremors near the Nord Stream pipeline point to explosions,” say seismologists from Denmark and Sweden

Seismologists from Denmark and Sweden report that the tremors occurred near its pipelines Nord Stream in the Baltic Sea, refer to explosions and not in some other phenomenon, such as an earthquake.

Characteristically, the Swedish seismologist Bjorn Lund said he was confident that the seismic activity recorded in the Baltic Sea it was due to explosions and not earthquakes or landslides.

Also, the Geological Survey of Denmark it also said the two tremors recorded Monday night by seismographic stations in Denmark, Sweden and Germany were more suggestive of explosions than earthquakes.

According to Lund, who works at Uppsala University’s National Seismic Network, the second explosion was stronger and corresponded to the detonation of 100 kilograms of dynamite. The data collected by him and his colleagues from other Nordic countries show that the explosions took place in the water and not on the rocky seabed.

In addition, air quality measurements on the Baltic island of Bornholm showed that the gas leak from the Nord Stream pipelines poses little to no risk to public health, Denmark’s Emergency Management Agency said in a statement.
