The desire to have a smile with dimples — those “holes” on the cheek — have led people to look for devices that promise to create the appearance artificially.
A search for the term “dimplemakers” on TikTok, for example, leads to a series of videos of young people using an accessory consisting of a clamp system with spheres at the ends.
In the images it is possible to see these dimples appear when the devices are removed, but dermatologist Rosa Mato, a specialist at the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, states that this effect should be temporary.
“There is no lasting benefit. You have it there at that moment and after a few minutes it will return to normal. It does not have the capacity to produce something definitive, unless it is used continuously, but we do not know the real benefit of this”, he warns.

The dimples on the face are “a point of adherence of the skin to the muscle. Every time you smile, it retracts and forms a ‘hole’”, explains the dermatologist.
Although there is no specific data on the use of these devices, too intense pressure can lead to complications, according to the experts interviewed.
“Any type of device that alters or tightens tissue can lead to necrosis, skin changes, bruises or infections. These are changes that can lead to tissue loss”, ponders plastic surgeon from the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP) Victor Hugo Cordeiro.
According to plastic surgeon Mario Farinazzo, there is also a risk of causing permanent aesthetic damage. “It can cause fibrosis, skin ischemia, and a permanent scar and then you will have to treat it with surgery,” he explains.
Furthermore, Farinazzo highlights that this place “is a region that has a lot of nerves, which move the mouth and, if it is compressed too much, there can be partial paralysis of a region of the mouth or permanent paralysis”.
Artificial dimples
Another resource used to create artificial dimples is surgical interventions, but in this case the result is permanent.
The surgery is known as dimpleplasty and, according to Farinazzo, it is safe when done in the “correct way and by a competent professional”. According to the doctor, the technique aims to stick the skin to the inner muscles of the cheek to cause an effect similar to dimples.
“The side effect it can have is that these dimples will become visible during rest as well. Generally, those who have dimples appear more when they move, when they move, they smile. Those who undergo surgery to create dimples do not have this effect. Two “holes” appear on the patient’s cheek even without smiling”, he describes.
