Trinidad’s message to Canadians: Be patient for a few more weeks

The Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trinto today called on Canadians who are tired of the pandemic to “hold a few more weeks”, as the vaccination campaign “produces results” against the proliferation of mutated strains of the virus.

«We are in a situation where the whole world is exhausted“, Said Trinto in a press conference. But “we are in a third wave, which is extremely serious.”

“We must continue to hold for a few more weeks for the curve to level evenly and allow the millions of vaccines that will reach millions in the coming weeks to work,” he said.

A country of 38 million people, Canada exceeded the limit of one million coronavirus cases on Saturday, forcing several provinces to intensify their restrictions in recent days. More than 23,000 people have died from the pandemic.

Ontario, the driving force behind the country’s economy and the most populous province, stepped up on Saturday and extended to all areas for four weeks the restrictive measures that have so far applied exclusively to Toronto and its suburbs, while neighboring Quebec imposed quarantine in several areas and extended the night curfew in some cities.

The increase in the number of variant executives, which has almost tripled in the last two weeks, and the hospitalizations resulting from this increase are a growing concern, said Teresa Tam, a Public Health official.

More than 15,200 cases of variation have been identified so far in Canada, most in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.

The British variant “probably replaced” the original virus in some parts of the country, while the Brazilian variant, which may be more resistant to vaccines, is “on the rise,” he said.

The vaccination campaign in Canada, which started in December, seems to be accelerating in recent days, after many obstacles, mainly in the deliveries of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines at the beginning of the year.

To date, 15.7% of the country’s population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.

“We all need to speed up the vaccination process,” Justin Trinto said today, noting that Canada is expected to receive 44 million doses by the end of June. All Canadians who wish will have received both doses of the vaccine by the end of September, he repeated.
