Employees of “Kaspersky Lab” told that they managed to discover a new mechanism for the distribution of malicious software, which is directly related to the download of popular games from various sites. The company said that back in the spring of this year, experts recorded the active spread of the Trojan, the main task of which was to launch various malware on the user’s infected computer. And they distributed a trojan-dropper called Swarez under the guise of popular video games downloaded from pirated resources – the company’s employees said that these files were downloaded in 45 countries around the world (including Russia).
Games used by cybercriminals to distribute malicious software:
- Among US.
- Battlefield 4.
- Battlefield V.
- Control.
- Counter-Strike Global Offensive.
- FIFA 21.
- Fortnite.
- GTA V.
- Minecraft.
- NBA 2K21.
- Need for Speed Heat.
- PUBG.
- Rust.
- The Sims 4.
- Titanfall 2.
The malicious software, according to Kaspersky experts, was in a special ZIP archive with a password, the key to which was in a text document, after which it was packed into another ZIP archive. Accordingly, after unpacking the files, the user will activate the Trojan, which has a very impressive set of functions. For example, he knows how to steal user cookies, saved passwords and data from browser autocorrect, even get information about a cryptocurrency wallet. Moreover, this software can take screenshots of the user’s desktop, collect data about the system, and even steal text files.
To avoid the situation with the infection of the user’s computer, the company’s experts advise not to download games from third-party sites, use two-factor authentication and, of course, install a good antivirus. In fact, the first piece of advice is enough.
