A truck caught fire inside a tunnel on the Linha Amarela expressway in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday morning (8). The fire has already been controlled, but several people needed medical attention.
The Fire Department reported that the Jacarepaguá barracks were called at around 7 am to respond to the incident inside the Covanca tunnel.
In total, around 35 people needed treatment at the scene due to the dense smoke that filled the tunnel. Of these, 14 were rescued by the Fire Department, but none were in serious condition. All victims were taken to hospitals in the region.
According to Lamsa, the concessionaire that manages Linha Amarela, firefighters responded to the scene and provided assistance to people who were passing through the tunnel and felt unwell.
In videos circulating on social media, it is possible to see black smoke spreading and drivers abandoning their cars inside the tunnel. Many people ran to escape the scene. Look :
Lamsa reported that traffic remains blocked in the direction of the Center. Teams from the concessionaire are working to remove vehicles that were left inside the tunnel to free up traffic.
The company recommends that customers who are on the road use the Barra direction as an alternative, and that drivers avoid the area.
