Trump and Milei’s rapprochement should not impact relations between Brazil and Argentina, sources say

The close relationship between Republican Party candidate and former US President Donald Trump and Javier Milei, President of Argentina, does not pose any risks to trade relations between Brazil and Argentina, according to sources in Brazilian diplomacy who are following both the US elections and relations with the neighboring country.

At Itamaraty, the analysis is that within Milei’s government there is a perspective that a possible election of Trump could bring “concrete advantages” to the country.

However, regarding the trade relations of the South American neighbors, diplomats believe that there is a “unique cooperation” between Brazil and Argentina and do not see how the United States could “take away space” from Brazilian products.

Among the reasons cited by diplomats is the fact that the countries are bordering each other and have consolidated cooperation in various sectors, despite the ideological orientation of the governments of both over the last few years.

This week, Bitelli was summoned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) for consultations in Brazil. The move was made after Milei came to Brazil for a conservative event. The president of Argentina also made trips to the United States and did not meet with American President Joe Biden.

The diplomat also had a brief meeting with Lula, who asked for bilateral relations to be maintained, despite Milei.

The ambassador’s agenda also included meetings with ministers from various areas such as Industry and Commerce, Defense and Agriculture.

From the meetings, Bitelli left with an agenda of priorities to be addressed for future business opportunities with neighbors.

Points of attention include the import of natural gas from Argentines in the Vaca Muerta region, cooperation in the production of agricultural inputs such as fertilizers and the export of specialty coffees to neighbors.

The expectation is that without the prospect of personal relations between Lula and Milei, the ministerial agendas between the two countries will be intensified.

The Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, signaled, for example, that he may participate in a sector meeting in Argentina, in October.

Despite the prospects of intensifying trade relations, Brazilian diplomats are closely monitoring the transformations formulated by the Milei government in economic, social and state management policies.

Since the 2023 Argentine presidential campaign, the Brazilian Ambassador to Argentina, Julio Bitelli, began to open channels for dialogue with the future Milei government.

For the diplomatic corps, despite the lack of personal relations between the Brazilian and Argentine presidents, ministerial relations and relations between embassies occur without difficulties.
