Trump and Starmer gather on Thursday (27) amid disagreements about Ukraine

United States President Donald Trump and United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Strmer will meet at the White House on Thursday (27) for his first face-to-face conversations since the Republican leader took over the US government.

Strmer is the second European leader to meet Trump this week, days after France President Emmanuel Macron, going to the White House for a friendly meeting that showed divergences from the Russian war with Ukraine and US pressure for a fast ceasefire.

Trump, who took office on January 20, shocked traditional US allies in Europe as he approached Moscow and Russian President Vladimir Putin calling Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, “dictator” and demanding the return on US financial support to Kiev.

Zelensky must be in Washington on Friday (28) to sign an agreement with Trump about rare land minerals, an agreement that the Ukrainian leader said he would depend on more US help. Trump portrays the agreement as a way to recover the American money that was spent to support Ukraine. It does not include specific security guarantees for the country, a US official said.

Stmerer asked on Wednesday that the United States will provide a security backstop to any European forces who participate in a possible peacekeeping function in Ukraine, saying that this would offer Kiev a lasting peace instead of a temporary break in violence.

He has signaled that the United Kingdom will increase defense spending and should try to reassure the US President that Europe will provide Kiev’s support and security guarantees if Peace negotiations with Russia are successful. A tall Trump government official told reporters that they were pleased with Stmerer’s promises to increase defense spending.

President Vladimir Putin warned on Thursday the “western elites” against trying to sabotage a possible rapprochement between Russia and the United States, saying that Moscow would use his diplomats and intelligence services to frustrate such efforts. The observations were an apparent reference to the European Union and the United Kingdom.

Trump has destroyed the rules of foreign policy and policy since the beginning of his second term, shaking allies by defending the gaza range by the US and promising commercial tariffs to friends and enemies from the United States.

Trade was an expected topic between the two leaders, as Trump demands more reciprocity from US partners, according to the president’s advisor.

“We would like any economic relationship with the United Kingdom to be based on reciprocal and egalitarian trade,” he said.

Trump’s relationship with Strmer began friendly in September with a two -hour dinner in New York on Trump Tower. The British leader’s team said the atmosphere was warm with the “graceful host” offering Foreign Minister David Lammy a second portion of chicken.

Like Macron, Starmer will argue that a hasty peace agreement with Russia, without the participation of Ukraine or European nations, can lead to more instability in Europe, which would not be good for the United States.

Stamer said he is open to British troops providing safety guarantees to Ukraine, but only alongside other European nations and “the right conditions in force.”

European countries are concerned about the high level of conflict in Ukraine now, the US employee said, while a ceasefire would make them more comfortable that his role is more about maintaining peace than dissuasion of active conflicts.

“The type of force depends a lot on the political agreement that is made to end the war,” said the US official. “This exchange is part of what leaders today will argue.”
