US President Donald Trump announced today his decision to impose a 50% duty on imports from Brazil, communicating via Truth Social the letter he sent to his Brazilian counterpart Luis Inasio Lula da Silva. The duties will come into force on August 1st, Trump said. In the letter he does not fail to express his support to the far -right former Brazilian president, Zaich Bolsonaru, who is being tried for a trusted coup attempt. On Monday, Donald Trump had threatened the BRICS group states-a founding member of which is Brazil-by imposing additional duties of 10% if they adopted anti-American policies after criticizing his tariff policy. President Lula, a host of this year’s BRICS Summit, commented that it is “not serious” for the president of a country such as the US threatening the world with duties through posts on social networking platforms. “If the US imposes duties, other countries have the right to do the same,” he said.
