President-elect Donald Trump declared this Monday (30) that the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has his “complete” and “total” support, a big boost for the House’s top Republican ahead of a vote review this week.
Trump’s support comes as some House conservatives have warned they are not committed to supporting Johnson in the race for president.
The president-elect’s assistance could help Johnson secure the votes he will need, especially after he navigated a chaotic fight over government funding earlier this month that drew the ire of some members of the Republican Party.
But Johnson faces a narrow margin and can only lose a single Republican vote to win the gavel, leaving little room for error.
Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, said earlier this month that he did not plan to support Johnson in the race for president.
Separately, a count of CNN of members before Trump’s endorsement found that nearly a dozen others had not yet pledged.
Johnson will face a vote on the House floor on Friday (3) when the new Congress convenes.
Trump praised Johnson this Monday (30), saying he is a “hard worker” and “will do the right thing”.
“The American people need IMMEDIATE relief from all the destructive policies of the last administration. President Mike Johnson is a good, hard-working, religious man. He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my complete and total support. MAGA!!!,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
After Johnson struck a spending deal with Democrats in mid-December, Trump injected a last-minute demand to raise the debt ceiling that left him scrambling for a Plan B.
A revised GOP plan failed to win enough Republican votes to pass and caused complaints among Johnson supporters that the president was not up to the job.
It also made some wonder whether Trump would stick with Johnson before the fight over the president.
