Trump authorizes sanctions against the International Criminal Court

United States President Donald Trump authorized on Thursday (6) economic and travel sanctions aiming at people who work on International Criminal Court (ICC) against US citizens or allies, such as Israel.

Trump had already taken the measure during his first term in the US presidency.

The sanctions coincide with the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benajmin Netanyahu to Washington. The Israeli Premier is sought by TPI due to the war in the Gaza Strip.

It was not clear that the US would quickly announce the names of the sanctioned people. During the first Trump administration in 2020, Washington imposed sanctions on the then prosecutor foucated goods and one of his leading advisers about TPI investigation into alleged war crimes committed by US troops in Afghanistan.

The TPI did not immediately respond to a comment request. Sanctions include the freezing of any US assets of those designated and their ban and their families to visit the United States.

The Court of 125 members can prosecute individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and crime of aggression against the territory of signatory states or by their citizens. The United States, China, Russia and Israel are not members.

Trump signed the executive order after US Senate Democrats blocked last week an effort led by Republicans to pass legislation that established a sanction regime aiming at the war crimes court.

The court took steps to protect the team from possible US sanctions, paying salaries three months in advance, while preparing for financial restrictions that could undermine the war crimes court, Sources told Reuters last month.

In December, the president of the court, Judge Tomoko Akane, warned that the sanctions “would quickly undermine the court’s operations in all situations and cases, and endanger its own existence.”

Russia also has a history of actions against the court. In 2023, the ICC issued an arrest warrant to President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of the war crime of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine. Russia forbade the entry of TPI chief prosecutor Karim Khan, and placed him and two TPI judges on his list of wanted.
