JD Vance, backed by Donald Trump, won the nomination in the Ohio Republican Party’s disputed Senate primary, projects the CNN this Tuesday (3).
With most candidates in the race vying for the former president’s support, the primary was the first Senate race of the year to test Trump’s power in the Party.
In the night’s other big election, incumbent Ohio Governor Mike DeWine won the GOP gubernatorial primaries, projects the CNN defeating opponents while seeking a second term.
Although Trump did not declare support in the gubernatorial primaries, he played a major role in the race to replace retired Republican Senator Rob Portman.
The former president turned the tide in mid-April when he decided to support Vance, the author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” a book on his own history, who was a critic of Trump in 2016 but now says his initial judgment of him was wrong.
Trump called Vance to congratulate him on his victory on Tuesday night, according to a source. Gabby Orr, from CNN reported that the former president monitored the election results with friends and aides in Mar-a-Lago, one of whom said he was “relieved” by Vance’s victory.
Trump’s support for Vance boosted the author, helping him to double his support between a Fox poll in March and another in April.
Vance thanked Trump in his victory speech, saying the former president showed America an example of “what could be in this country”, pointing to an upward trend in wages when Trump was president.
After a primary race filled with negative ads in recent weeks, Vance called for unity in the GOP, praising several of his main rivals. When Vance mentioned former state treasurer Josh Mandel – prompting some in the crowd to boo – the author urged them to stop.
He called Mandel “a dedicated civil servant from the Marine Corps to the state treasurer’s office” and told Mandel’s supporters he hoped to win their support.
“We need to come together to fight Tim Ryan,” Vance said, referring to the Ohio congressman who won the Democratic Senate primary, as projected by CNN this tuesday.
